The U.S. Mint is releasing a limited amount of “America the Beautiful” quarters with the “W” mint mark into circulation, a first for the Mint in 227 years. The “W” notation is for West Point, where the coins will be produced.
The majority of minted coins in the U.S. carry a “D” for Denver or “P” for Philadelphia. While West Point has produced quarters in the past, they didn’t carry their own mint mark and were indistinguishable from the Philadelphia quarters, the mint said.
The West Point Mint will strike 10 million quarters that will be mixed into bulk bags at the Philadelphia and Denver mints. Those coins will be sent to banks and financial institutions and will likely appear in circulation within four to six weeks and be available through the rest of the year.
The “W” coins are part of an effort to encourage increased interest in coin collecting, according to United States Mint Director David Ryder.
“We want to encourage Americans to consider coin collecting by making the W mint mark quarters only available in general circulation,” Ryder said, adding the release comes at the same time as the American Numismatic Association’s National Coin Week. “We’re fortunate to be able to feature the W mint mark quarters at the same time dealers around the nation are mounting a similar effort to celebrate and promote the hobby of numismatics.”
The America the Beautiful Quarters to be released this year will honor Lowell National Historic Park (Massachusetts), American Memorial Park (Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands), War in the Pacific National Historic Park (Guam), San Antonio Mission National Historical Park (Texas), and the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness (Idaho).
